8 questions to ask before buying groomer insurance

A short checklist to bring to any insurance conversation. Answers vary by carrier, state, and your specific business — these questions help you compare apples to apples.

Buying insurance is easier when you know what to ask. Run through these eight before you commit to anything.

  1. Does it address pets in my care? General liability often excludes the animal you're working on. Ask how injury to a pet in your care, custody, and control is handled — this is where animal bailee / pet floater usually comes in.
  2. What are the limits, and are they enough? A low limit can leave a gap on a serious claim. Ask what limits are available and how they line up with your typical day and client expectations.
  3. How are my employees or helpers treated? If you have staff — even part-time or 1099 — ask how they factor in, and whether workers' comp applies in your state.
  4. Is my mobile rig covered the right way? A personal auto policy may not respond to business use. Ask whether a vehicle used for grooming needs commercial auto.
  5. What about my equipment and shop? Tables, dryers, tubs, and clippers add up. Ask how damage, theft, or loss of business property is handled.
  6. Do extended services change anything? Boarding, doggy daycare, and training shift your risk. Always disclose them up front so the coverage reflects what you actually do.
  7. What's excluded? The exclusions matter as much as the coverages. Ask for the plain-English version of what isn't included.
  8. Who do I call when something happens? Know how to report a claim and who helps you through it before you ever need to.
