Insurance for a grooming business isn't one product — it's a handful of pieces you can combine to fit how you work. Here are the seven that come up most often, in plain English.
- General liability. Generally associated with third-party bodily injury and property damage — for example, a client hurt while visiting your shop. It often excludes injury to the pet you're actively working on, which is why the next item comes up so often.
- Animal bailee / pet floater. Focused on animals in your care, custody, and control. If a pet you're grooming or boarding is injured or escapes, this is the coverage groomers typically look to. It's usually added alongside general liability rather than bought alone.
- Workers' compensation. For grooming businesses with employees or staff, this is generally associated with work-related injuries and the related medical and wage costs. Requirements vary by state; a business Tax ID (EIN) is usually needed to quote it.
- Commercial auto. Mobile groomers rely on a van or rig, and vehicles used for business often need their own policy rather than a personal auto policy. Commercial auto is generally associated with vehicles used in the operation of the business.
- Cyber liability. Online booking, stored payment details, and customer records create digital exposure. Cyber liability is generally associated with data breaches and certain cyber events — increasingly relevant for groomers who book or take payment online.
- Property / equipment. Tables, tubs, dryers, and clippers represent real value. Property / business personal property coverage is generally associated with damage to or loss of that equipment, and for building owners, the building itself.
- Professional liability. Generally associated with claims arising from the grooming service itself — for instance, an allegation that a service caused harm or wasn't performed as promised.
Which ones do you actually need?
Most groomers start with general liability and add animal bailee for the pets in their care, then layer on others as the business grows. See our sample claims for how these play out, or request a quote and tell us how you operate.
